‘Adopt a Cop’ was started in a community where
the people were
always
complaining
about their
local
police. The Lord challenged the Christians
in
that community about their negative behaviour
and they
looked
for
something positive to do.
The most positive thing they could do as Christians
was to
pray. From that "Adopt A Cop" was born.
The local beat
officers were adopted by name and
others at the local police
station were also prayed for.
It had an immediate
impact on police/ public relations
for the better.
The first scheme in the
UK started in 1997 when
Christians in the Brixton area of
London started to
pray for their local police and support staff. There
are
now around 40 groups in the Brixton area regularly
praying for heir police
and the civilian staff. This was
then taken up by the CPA nationally and the
project launched.
Why do we call upon churches to pray specifically
for
the
police service? We are following the Apostle
Paul's charge to
Timothy "I urge, then, first of all,
that
requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for ... all those in
authority, that we may
live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and
holiness" I Tim. 2:1-2 (NIV)
When we ask ourselves "Who in authority is charged
with
ensuring that we live peaceful and quiet lives?"
the answer must surely be the Police Service.
